Slavery Obscured: the social history of the slave trade in Bristol by Madge Dresser 235 pp Theme Bristol and the Slave trade:the case for reparations
Bristol Quakers have set up a reparations group to examine our forebears' role in the slave trade. It turns out to have been significantly greater than most of us feel comfortable with. The book I have recommended is by a Reader in History at UWE who in 2007 played a leading role in organising 'Abolition 200’ - Bristol City Council’s series of publlc events to mark the abolition of the slave trade in British Colonies.
I have to admit that I gave what turns out to have been a rather naive talk at one of these events. I’d like to offer an evening at which we explore the impact that ‘the Africa trade’ had on our city and examine the United Nations' definition of reparations and the case for and against taking any action.
