“Underdogs" By Joel Budd. 336 pages published on 17 April 2025 so will be in
hardback but probably able to be borrowed from the library if date is later in the
year. At present is book of the week on Radio 4 in highly abridged format. It will
undoubtedly be on Audible very soon.
Budd is British editor of the Economist his specialisation is writing about
society. This book is a an examination of white working class Britain a very badly
misunderstood group in modern Britain though in recent years a group that has been
and still is driving the political agenda. He looks at WWC communities across
Britain - from Romney to Thetford to Teesside to Lincolnshire - the myths about
them, the reality, -offering a “sharp corrective” to middle-class perceptions. Would
probably do us good!
From the radio abridgement Budd’s style is light and very listenable and I suspect
readable. Having listened to the abridgement I want to read the full text.
